The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months. From April 2012 this was extended to include pupils eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever 6 FSM measure).

The purpose of the funding is to ensure that these children and young people are not disadvantaged in school and to find ways to support them to do their best. Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, but the aim is always to narrow the achievement gap between these students and their peers.
